The story of a DIY Divorce Filer.

Can’t we just fill out some papers and the Judge sign our Divorce Decree?

One day, I was sitting back in the Judge’s Chambers and I was asking some questions for the new DIY Divorce Secrets course I was creating. When I asked what she saw as the biggest challenge for DIYers, Judge looked at me an laughed… that’s when she told me this story.

A guy just that week went up on the witness stand (after the Judge asked if he was ready to proceed), and his testimony consisted of 2 things… his name and that he wanted a divorce. No joke. That was all he said.

Everyone was looking at him. Attorneys were shaking their heads. The Judge sat there quietly thinking he was going to say more but he never did.

Want to know what happened next?

The Judge gave him an invitation to come back and try again.

Know what did not happen?

He did not walk out the courtroom without a divorce.

What was his reaction?

“Why does getting a divorce have to be so hard?”

I guess I don’t have to remind you this is a courtroom. I went to law school for 3 years after college and spent years learning all the tricks to get a divorce done fast. The truth is, when you represent yourself, you have to do everything the lawyer does without the benefit of having any idea what to do or how to do it.

Are you someone who has a simple, easy, uncontested divorce? If you want to file without an attorney, it is possible.

What is the benefit of filing your divorce without an attorney?

Saving a lot of money. I charge my clients at least $1,500 to do a flat fee divorce. If you go hourly, it might be $2,500- $5,000 depending on how much your Spouse cooperates (or disappears). If you have a high conflict divorce, you are more in the ball park of $30,000.

If you have a super easy divorce — you already split up everything, you don’t have real estate or children, then you can DIY your divorce with a little help.

Don’t make the mistakes I see people make all the time. After years of fixing people’s botched DIY attempts, plus almost 30 years of experience as a family law attorney, I promise I can show you exactly what to do and skip hiring me 1–1 and paying all that money.
